a friend of sinners

Today we read a lesson that we still haven't learned 2000 years later. We read this in Luke 15:1-32 in the One Year Bible. Jesus is hanging out with a bunch of notorious sinners, including tax collectors. The religious leaders at the time are all indignant and can't believe that someone who claimed to be holy would be with such people, even EATING with them!

Of course, we know why Jesus spent time with them. He loved them. He came to save them, and us, and everyone who realizes that they are a sinner and need salvation. It was difficult for the religious leaders to be saved because they didn't think they needed to be saved from anything.

We find the same type of people saying the same things today. Gossiping about "so called holy people" who hang out with "sinners". Not realizing that the gossip we're engaging in is so much worse than the sins that we suspect them of.

So why don't we make an attempt to learn? Let's decide, here and now, to BE friends with sinners. To hang out with people who need Jesus. Since we're one of them ourselves, it only makes sense for us to do so.

God, thanks for teaching us that we're all sinners in need of a savior. Help us love one another and put gossip and self righteousness behind us.
