the number of people who will be saved
They ask Jesus a very big question today in the One Year Bible. The reading is from Luke 13:22-14:6. They ask Jesus if only a few people will be saved.
What you might notice is that Jesus doesn't answer the question directly. He doesn't say yes or no. He doesn't give a number. He says, in His typical way of teaching us who are reading His words, that we should strive to enter through the narrow gate. In other words, He says don't worry so much about how many people will make it - focus on whether or not YOU will be there.
He does go on to say that many who might take their presence in the Kingdom for granted might be surprised to find themselves outside. And He very clearly says that many who are first now will be last then, and vice versa.
We DO know from the book of Revelation that there will be a huge number of people in heaven. And the Bible doesn't say that anyone in particular goes to hell, only those "whose names are not written in the Book of Life."
So the take home lesson here is: you think about you. Make sure that YOU are one of the ones who enter through that narrow gate. And let God take care of everyone else. Share the gospel, of course. Love everyone. But it's not your job to save people. It's the work of the Holy Spirit that will do that.
God, thanks for focusing our attention on what matters.
