why did Peter deny Jesus?

Today we read from these verses in the One Year Bible:

Judges 6:1-40
Luke 22:54-23:12
Psalm 95:1-96:13
Proverbs 14:5-6

Let's look at Luke. Jesus is arrested and the disciples flee. Several people recognize Peter and say he was with Jesus. Peter commits so many sins at once here. He's cowardly, he lies, and he denies his savior and his God.

Why did he do it? Well, for many reasons, but I'll talk about two of them here. The first one was that he was terrified. He knew what was going to happen to Jesus, more or less. And he was so afraid that he lied and denied Jesus to save his own skin.

The second one is about me and you. Peter denied Jesus so that you and I would learn that no matter what horrible thing we've done, Jesus will come meet us on the beach, feed us some fish, and forgive us, restoring us to our relationship with Him. Notice that: Peter didn't go find Jesus and apologize. Jesus came to Peter and reinstated him. God seeks us out.

God, thanks for teaching us through Peter that no matter what we've done, You still love us and will fix our relationship with You.
