God loves Jerusalem

Today we read in the One Year Bible from these verses:

Joshua 19:1-20:9
Luke 19:28-48
Psalm 88:1-18
Proverbs 13:12-14

Let's look at Luke. Jesus sees Jerusalem, and He weeps. It's one of the very few times that we're told that Jesus wept. He laments that the city doesn't recognize that peace has come - it is hidden from their eyes. And He foresees that the city will be destroyed.

We see in Revelation that at the end of time, a "New Jerusalem" will come down from heaven to the new Earth, and that's where many of us will live for eternity. The name "Jerusalem" means "foundation of God", and we see that God uses the idea of "foundation" when He talks about what heaven will be like. Besides golden streets, the new Jerusalem will have many layers of foundations, each of which represents perfection.

What a great foundation we have to look forward to! The heavenly city will be a redeemed version of the city that Jesus wept over in the passage from Luke. And we will see Lazarus walking those streets, whom Jesus also wept over in this mortal world.

God, thanks for the sure foundations we have to look forward to in eternity.
