Today we read from these verses in the One Year Bible:
Daniel 1:1-2:23
1 Peter 3:8-4:6
Psalm 119:65-80
Proverbs 28:14
Let's look at the Psalm. David says, "You (God) are good, and all that you do is good." That's a very simple sentence, and doesn't even use very many words. But it's very profound, especially if we keep it in mind throughout our lives.
Things go wrong in life. The car doesn't start. We get sick. A friend passes away. Even harder (in many ways), our beloved pet passes away. And this causes pain. It's important in those moments to have good theology, because if you don't you might be tempted to BLAME God for the things that hurt you. "You could have prevented this, God!" you might feel like shouting.
But we can have good theology. We can realize that every good and perfect gift comes from God. God is goodness itself. There are times when things will hurt us, due to the sinful, fallen world we live in. But God made things perfect, and He will make them perfect again. Right now we're in the valley of tears. We are pilgrims traveling through a strange land. We're not home yet. God will, in the end, make all things well, and all things well, and all manner of things well. That's what Julian of Norwich told us, and it speaks very deeply into our hearts and reminds us that God is good, and all that He does is good.
So trust Him. Will things hurt you? Yes. But He will bring you through the pain and will make all things well.
God, thanks for being good, and for all that you do being good.
