set your mind on things above: One Year Bible Reading for October 7

Today we read from these verses in the One Year Bible:

Jeremiah 8:8-9:26
Colossians 3:1-17
Psalm 78:32-55
Proverbs 24:27

Let's look at Colossians. Paul says that we should stop thinking (so much) about the things of this world, and start thinking about the things "above" more often. And, helpfully, he lists many of the things found in both categories. He says to STOP thinking about:sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry...You used to walk in these ways, in the life you once lived. But now you must also rid yourselves of all such things as these: anger, rage, malice, slander, and filthy language from your lips.

OK, so far so good. Now what SHOULD we be thinking about? He says:clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.

He then goes on to say that you should stop spending so much time on social media, arguing about politics, and more time loving your family and friends and doing good for the poor.

OK, maybe he didn't add that last bit, but he would if he were alive today.

God, thanks for teaching us what we should fill our minds with.
