Sex is Holy: One Year Bible Reading for September 6

Today we read from these verses in the One Year Bible:

Song of Solomon 1:1-4:16
2 Corinthians 8:16-24
Psalm 50:1-23
Proverbs 22:22-23

Let's look at Song of Solomon. We see pretty quickly that this is a love poem! And on one level, it's about how God loves us. There are definitely metaphorical elements in which we see that God's love for His children is "more delightful than wine".

But it's also a celebration of the marriage act. It's a poem about the beauty and sanctity of sexual intercourse. That's what much of the world totally doesn't understand. They think the church condemns sex as something evil and nasty and dirty. It's exactly the opposite. The church teaches that we should PROTECT the sexual act because it isn't just a fun thing that people can do when they feel like it. It's a holy union. It's actually a sacrament in the church!

That's why we shouldn't just hook up with anyone. That's why it hurts so much when we play the games that are so popular today and have one night stands. Because that's not what sex was designed for. It was created to unite us in a very deep and spiritual way with another person, and even sometimes to create a whole new person.

God, thanks for reminding us that You made sex, and it's a holy act.
