Pray for the Vain: One Year Bible Reading for August 19

Today we read from these verses in the One Year Bible:

Esther 4:1-7:10
1 Corinthians 12:1-26
Psalm 36:1-12
Proverbs 21:21-22

Let's look at the Psalm. It is describing the world in which the psalmist lived. But it is also VERY MUCH describing these modern times. It says that many people don't fear God, and instead they flatter themselves too much to detect or hate their sin.

These days of social media, we are all flattering ourselves. Filters on Instagram make us look better than we are. We only share our vacations and promotions on Facebook, making people envious. We're so busy building an image of ourselves online that we "fail to detect or hate our sin."

So let's pray that God gets people's attention. That He shows them their sins in a way that they can't ignore. So they repent and come back to Him. We all need Him and His forgiveness.

God, thanks for reminding us to stop flattering ourselves and turn away from our sins.
