Don't Consult Baal: One Year Bible Reading for July 26

Today we read from these verses in the One Year Bible:

2 Chronicles 17:1-18:34
Romans 9:25-10:13
Psalm 20:1-9
Proverbs 20:2-3

Let's look at 2 Chronicles. It says that Jehoshaphat did good because he followed in David's example, and he didn't consult the Baals. What does that mean?

Well, in his time there was a cult that worshiped a god named Baal. They had altars where they made human sacrifice to Baal. And people who had to make big decisions, like kings, would sometimes consult Baals to find out what they should do.

Today, we don't call it Baal (usually). But we DO put our trust in other things besides God. We trust in astrology. We trust "the experts". We trust our experience. We put our trust in the Baals of our time instead of trusting God.

So let's strive to trust God alone. Don't even trust your own experience over God. He's known to change things.

God, thanks for teaching us where to put our trust.
