Remember the Big Picture: One Year Bible Reading for June 25

Today we read from these verses in the One Year Bible:

2 Kings 8:1-9:13
Acts 16:16-40
Psalm 143:1-12
Proverbs 17:26

Let's look at Acts. We see some amazing things happen here. First, this woman is following Paul around saying, "This man is from God and will tell you how to be saved." And that seems like a good thing, right? But keep in mind that the enemy will often use the truth as a weapon against the gospel. This fortune telling woman was telling the truth but in such a way as to make people think it was a joke or that he was associated with the dark arts. She was using the truth against him. So Paul rebuked her, and the evil spirit came out of her, and the people who were using her for money got really mad and threw Paul in jail.

But God sent an earthquake, kind of like the earthquake that overturned Roe v Wade today, and Paul was set free. But Paul remembered the big picture, and so should we. Paul knew that if he and his companions left, the jailor would be killed for letting them escape. So he stayed in jail and told the jailor not to harm himself. Then the moment of the big picture came: the jailor asked, "What must I do to be saved?"

It's a wonderful answer to prayer that Roe V Wade was overturned today. Many states have already banned abortion in their state following the decision. Many, many babies' lives will be saved due to this decision, thanks be to God. But let's remember the even bigger picture - the eternal destination of the souls of all the people who believe that abortion is a good thing. We need to love them, and pray for them. While we do rejoice in this great decision from a wonderful Supreme Court, let's continue to be gracious and to love those who are dealing with changes they don't understand.

God, thanks for the wonderful decision brought about on this wonderful day. And thanks for reminding us of the big picture.
