Today we read from these verses in the One Year Bible:
2 Kings 10:32-12:21
Acts 18:1-22
Psalm 145:1-21
Proverbs 18:1
Let's look at the proverb. Thankfully it's not about bribes today! It's about being selfish. It says, "An unfriendly person pursues selfish ends." And to be honest, it's hard to stop being selfish. Because we all want good things in our lives and we want to be happy and have fun, right? But if that's our goal all the time, we will end up being selfish! So how do we break out of that cycle?
C.S. Lewis gives us the key. He said that the key to being humble and stop being selfish is NOT to think less of yourself. It's to think of yourself less! Think about that. If you get busy loving other people, thinking about them and their needs and their happiness, then you find yourself being less selfish and more humble simply because you love someone else and care about THEIR happiness. The funny thing is that making them happy will then make YOU happy. But you don't do it through selfishness - you do it through love.
God, thanks for teaching us how to be less selfish and more humble - through loving others.
