St Thomas Becket: Will No One Rid me of this Troublesome Priest?

Be careful what you wish for! St Thomas Becket was an influential counsel to the king of England, Henry II. He was then elected to Bishop of Canterbury, against his wishes. He warned the king that he couldn't do both, and he was right. He began resisting the king's plans when they contradicted God's plans. The king became enraged and roared, "Will no one rid me of this troublesome priest?" Four knights took this as their mission and went to Canterbury, where they slew St Thomas Becket.

Filled with remorse, the king publicly repented and acknowledged his wrongdoing. Would that leaders today would learn from this king what to do when you've done wrong. You can read more about St Thomas Becket here.

Are you willing to stand up to your culture when it teaches things that are contrary to God's will? It's not always easy - it might even cost you your life.

God, thanks for the inspiring example of this brave and wise priest. St Thomas Becket, pray for us.
