St Francis Xavier: Not Good at Languages

Today we celebrate St Francis Xavier. He was born in Spain, and went to study with St Ignatius of Loyola. He was skeptical of the saint at first, but then he saw the depth of the faith of Ignatius and joined the brand new society of Jesus, also known as the Jesuits. He then went on mission to Japan, Indonesia, and other countries in the east. He thought the best way to share Jesus was to learn the local language, so he did. But he wasn't good at languages! He didn't let that stop him from diligently working to learn them and use them to share his faith. He baptized over 30,000 people!

He felt God calling him to China, so he made preparations to go. But he passed away from sickness before he left. You can read more about him here.

What is God calling you to do? Sometimes He calls us to do things we're not good at. But as Chesterton famously said, "Anything worth doing is worth doing poorly." Don't wait to do it well. Just do it!

God, thanks for the great example of obedience in this wonderful missionary. St Francis Xavier, pray for us.
