St Frances Xavier Cabrini: The First US Citizen Who Became a Saint

Today we celebrate a great woman name Frances Xavier Cabrini. She was born in Italy in the 19th century. She wanted to go to China as a missionary, but the Pope called her instead to go to the US. She arrived in New York in 1889, and started working immediately to help the poor. She opened institutions to teach and help the poor all over the Americas, from California to South America. She died while preparing Christmas candy for children in her community. You can read more about her here.

St Frances thought she wanted to go to China. But God had other plans for her. She showed humility by doing what He asked her to do instead of what she thought she wanted. Who knows what her life would have been like had she gone to China? But God knew what her heart truly desired, and fulfilled those desires through His calling for her to help the poor of the Americas.

Sometimes we think we know what we want today, too. We see an ad for something, or we see one of our friends do something, and we think "I want that." But God knows what we truly want - what will actually satisfy our hearts. Let's have the same humility that St Frances had and follow His calling to what will give us the greatest fulfillment.

God, thanks for the great example of this wonderful and obedient young woman. St Frances Xavier Cabrini, pray for us.
