The saint we read about today in the book In Caelo et in Terra was imprisoned for not paying a bill, and then released to make money to pay it. And then (the book says through a strange series of events, but that needs looking into!) he was ordained bishop and then pope! Another man named Hippolytus disagreed with Callistus's decision to let Christians with serious sins (like denying Jesus) be forgiven, and set himself up as antipope! What a story!
I definitely need to look into this more when I have some time. But the takeaway message today is that no matter where you start, God can take you somewhere amazing!
God, thanks for the truly remarkable story of this slave turned pope. Pope St Callistus I, pray for us.
