Today in the book In Caelo et in Terra, we read about St Mary Magdalene. Her life is a great snapshot of all of us.
She has often been associated with several other people in the Bible, including the sister of Martha and Lazarus. There is no indication in the Bible or in Church teachings that she was a prostitute. We do know that Jesus cast demons out of her. We know that she was profoundly grateful. We know that she was at the foot of the cross when most of the disciples fled. And we know that she was the first person to be given the good news of Jesus's resurrection.
This is such a great snapshot of all of us. The world has done us wrong, we have made some terrible choices, and we have our demons to contend with. Jesus comes along and gives us power over them. The world cooks up some gossip about us and our past, even though Jesus and the Church are far more concerned about our futures. And even though (because?) we are desperate sinners, we are given the unbelievable privilege of sharing the good news of eternal life with everyone that we meet.
You can read more about her here.
God, thanks for the humble example of this sinner made saint. St Mary Magdalene, pray for us.
