Today we read about St Martha in the book In Caelo et in Terra. She was obviously a hard worker, given the story we read about her and Mary and Lazarus in the gospels. And hard work is a very good thing. But she got corrected (gently) by Jesus when she complained that Mary wasn't helping her get the chores done.
Notice that Jesus doesn't say, "You should stop all of that unnecessary work and come sit and do nothing." Instead, He points out that she is "worried and distracted by many things." And He points out that Mary has chosen the best thing of all - focusing on Jesus. You can read more about her here.
God definitely wants us to work. There are many admonitions throughout the Bible that remind us of the great value of hard work. But we are also commanded not to worry. God wants us to work - and to trust in Him. It's not either/or. Trust God - and work hard.
God, thanks for the reminder that this hard working woman gives us. St Martha, pray for us.
