Today we read about St Cyril of Alexandria in the book In Caelo et in Terra. He was a brilliant theologian who presided over the Council of Ephesus in the 5th century and saved the church from the heresy of trying to split Jesus into two people. A certain bishop named Nestorius was teaching that Mary was NOT the Mother of God because she was only the mother of the human Jesus, not the divine Jesus. But Cyril taught in clear and definitive terms that Jesus was ONE person with two natures, so Mary was in fact the Mother of God.
Cyril struggled with being argumentative and combative all of his life, and tried hard to correct this in himself. This is encouraging to all of us who struggle with our weaknesses while trying to follow Jesus. Cyril made it, and so can you. You can read more about him here.
God, thanks for the example of this brilliant man who still had some learning to do about humility. St Cyril of Alexandria, pray for us.
