Today we read about St Columba in the book In Caelo et in Terra. He was a combination of two things that are rare in the world but not that rare in Ireland: strong and gentle. The Irish are known for being powerful warriors but also lovers of poetry, and St Columbo was like that. From a young age, he was gentle and kind, but still of a powerful and strong body that allowed him to practice severe penances.
He eventually founded a monastery at Iona, which is where the Book of Kells came from. You can read more about him here.
Sometimes people think that being a Christian means being weak. We are called to be MEEK, not weak. God made us and our bodies, and making our bodies healthy and strong is a good way to honor Him. It allows us to live long, healthy lives in which we can do more and greater good.
God, thanks for the strong and gentle example of this powerful Irishman. St Columba, pray for us.
