Today we read about a saint that we know very little about. His name is St Matthias, and he was one of the twelve apostles! We read about him in the book In Caelo et in Terra, but it really doesn't have much to say about him. Most of the reading today just quotes the Bible when it talks about his being chosen to replace Judas.
We know that Matthias was with the other followers of Jesus from the time He was baptized until He was resurrected. And one legend says he was crucified, while another says he was beheaded. Many early pictures of him, like the one above, depict him with an axe, which lends credibility to the beheading story.
You can read more about him here.
The take home lesson here, though, is that Matthias is probably alot like most Christians today. Quietly following Jesus, minding their own business, staying out of trouble, and not calling attention to their good deeds. See, throughout history we only hear about the bad ones. Even with St Peter, most of the time he's mentioned in the Bible it's because he's doing or saying something dumb. The followers of Jesus who follow Him the best are the ones you often hear from the least.
There's a lesson we can all learn from.
God, thanks for the quiet good work of this saint about whom we know so little. St Matthias, pray for us.
