Today in the book In Caelo et in Terra, we read about a hero of the early church. St Athanasius defended the truth of Jesus's identity against many who were trying to introduce heresy into the church. Arianism was all the rage at that time, which denied that Jesus was divine. Even though it is difficult to explain or even comprehend, the mystery of the Trinity is a truth that the church has taught from the beginning.
So heated was the debate over this issue that many people, including several emperors of Rome, wanted Athanasius dead. He hid from his enemies and continued teaching the truth, writing books that explained the truth of the church's teaching.
You can read more about St Athanasius here.
There are many heresies today. Some deny the true presence of Jesus in the Eucharist. Some deny that there is a God at all, or that Jesus ever lived. Some deny that the earth is a globe. We know that all of these are errors, and we, like St Athanasius, need to share these truths in love with those who have fallen into these errors.
God, thanks for giving us this hero who defended Your truth. St Athanasius, pray for us.
