Blessed Margaret of Castello: Patroness of the Abandoned

Prepare yourself. This is the saddest story you'll hear today. We read about Blessed Margaret of Castello in the book In Caelo et in Terra. Margaret was born blind, hunchback, and lame. Her parents were so ashamed of her that they locked her away in a room with no doors: only a window that she was fed through, and a window into the chapel next door from which she received the Eucharist.

It gets worse.

She was taken to a popular shrine where her parents prayed that she would be cured. When the cure they asked for didn't come, they abandoned her on the street. She survived by begging from the poor. Eventually someone took pity on her, and recognized her piety, and took her in. She finally became a Benedictine tertiary and visited those who had been forgotten by the world: especially the dying.

You can read more about her here

Do you know anyone who needs your visit today? Your smile? A kind word? You never know what an enormous difference your kindness might make in someone's life.

God, thanks for taking care of this poor woman who was forgotten by the world. Blessed Margaret of Castello, pray for us.
