St Brigid of Ireland: The Sassy Saint

So St Therese of Liseux, the Little Flower, will always be my absolute favorite saint of all time. But the saint we read about today in the book In Caelo et in Terra is a challenger to the throne. What a bold, sassy, but holy young girl she was! Irish, believe it or not. You can read more about her here. But she was always giving away things from her house to the poor. Her dad was going to kick her out of the house (she was the daughter of a slave, so didn't exactly get preferential treatment anyway) but the king saw her holiness and told her dad to give her her freedom.

So she left home and gathered some other girls and found a priest. She got them all lined out, and they became a religious order. She worked with the poor and led by example. Many called her Mary of Ireland because of the way she was so down to earth and worked so hard at seemingly menial tasks.

Do you ever feel like menial things are beneath you? It's easy to get that mentality, especially as we get older... that we've DONE our duty and it's time to let the younger folk do the bulk of the work. But we all know that everyone respects hard workers more than they do those who let others carry the load.

God, thanks for giving us the hilarious, sassy, hard-working example of this Irish girl. St Brigid of Ireland, pray for us.
