Today in the book In Caelo et in Terra, we read about St Angela Merici. This poor woman suffered a great deal!
When she was just a little girl, three of her brothers, one of her sisters, and both of her parents died. That's hard enough right there. But then she and her one remaining sister went to live with their uncle, who then died, too.
Rather than allowing all of that pain to make her bitter or angry about life, she became a lay Franciscan. Most women in her time, if they were not married, became either prostitutes or beggars. But St Angela took charge of her life, put it into God's hands, and founded a "Company of St Ursula", to whom she had a devotion. After she died, her little order became the first women's teaching order in the church. Talk about taking your pain and turning it into something beautiful! You can read more about her here.
God, thanks for the inspiring example of this suffering saint. St Angela Merici, pray for us.
