Today we read about St Fabian in the little book In Caelo et in Terra. He is the saint of the day for January 19. You can read more about him here.
He was a farmer who visited Rome when they were selecting a new pope. A dove landed on his head, and tradition says that those who were electing the pope took this as a sign of God's favor and Fabian ended up as pope. He made some very good decisions, honoring the remains of several deceased saints, and sending missionaries to Gaul. He also appointed seven administrators to take care of the day to day affairs of Rome. Eventually an emperor came to power in Rome that severely persecuted the church, and Fabian was martyred. What a life!
No matter where you start from, even an humble life of a farmer, God may have great plans for you. What is He calling you to do?
God, thanks for the example of this farmer who became a great pope. Pope St Fabian, pray for us.
