what 2020 has taught us

Today in the One Year Bible, we read from Isaiah 15:1-18:7. What Isaiah tells the people of Moab seems unbelievable to them. And if we had read something similar about the US in 2019, we would have found it unbelievable, too.

But then 2020 came along. We've seen some crazy stuff this year. It's made many people change their mindsets. Our paradigms have shifted. Many of us have lost loved ones, or lost jobs. Many of us have had to find new ways to make a living, new ways to relate to our friends and family.

Now we don't find Isaiah's words so hard to believe. "In one night, the town of Ar will be leveled," he says, "and the city of Kir will be destroyed." In 2020, a gender reveal party might destroy Ar and Kir.

It's amazing how our perspective changes when we experience disaster. It gives us an insight about what is really important in life. It teaches us that the rat race is not even fit for rats, and that keeping up with the Joneses is a great way to stay miserable for life.

Fortunately many of us have actually learned this. Many people I talk to tell me how much they've learned from 2020, and how they've discovered what's really important in their lives.

Let's continue to learn from 2020, and let's remember those lessons when things return to "normal."

God, thanks for teaching us valuable lessons as we travel through the fire.
