unfortunate kids

Today we read from Isaiah 8:1-9:21 in the One Year Bible. Isaiah names his poor kid "Maher-shalal-hash-baz" because before he's old enough to say "papa", the King of Assyria was going to carry away both the abundance of Damascus and the riches of Samaria.

Poor kid! Right from birth he was swept up into the politics of his time. But when you think about it, we're all swept up into the times that we live in, whether we like it or not. We don't get to choose when we're born, or what our name is, or who our parents are. Like Gandalf says, it's not for us to decide. All that we have to decide is what to do with what we're given - the time, name, and lives that God puts us in.

What will you do with yours?

God, thanks for the gifts we're given at birth, even if we don't like them. Give us wisdom to use them well.
