LORD of the universe

Today in the One Year Bible, we read from Isaiah 3:1-5:30. Isaiah tells us that the Lord, who is the LORD of Heaven's Armies, will take away the things that Jerusalem and Judah depend on. There's much to unpack in that one sentence, and it applies to our lives today.

First of all, God is in control. When you look around our country and our world today, it seems like a mess. It seems out of control. But even if the world WERE as messed up as it appears (it isn't), it's still under His control. He allows us to do stupid things - He lets us hurt each other. But keep in mind, we only suffer for a maximum of about 70 years. And then eternity is forever - making our short little blip of a life on earth seem like nothing.

But going back to that "it isn't", keep in mind that the media's job is to tell you all the bad things. Every day they pile on the horror stories. They don't mention all of the amazing good that happens among common people like you and me every day. Their job is to sell headlines. And bad news sells. So don't let the news color your perception of reality. Remember that God is in control, and He is nothing but good.

Finally, God took away the things that these nations depended on. Why? Because they were depending on them instead of on Him. What are you depending on today? What might God have to remove from your life so that you remember that He is actually the ground of your being?

God, thanks for being so completely in control - and for reminding us that we need You.
