do it scared

Today in the One Year Bible, we read from Ezra 3:1-4:23. The passage tells us that the people of Israel were afraid of the local residents where they were trying to build, but they rebuilt there anyway. They did it, trembling in the presence of their enemies.

Of course, it's best if we can remain calm and peaceful in our faith in God. It's preferable if we can trust Him enough to lose all of our fear. Perfect love casts it out, after all. But sometimes we find ourselves still human, all too human. And even though we know what He's calling us to do, we're still afraid to do it.

That's when the time comes to do it scared. Speak the truth even if your voice trembles. Stand your ground even if your knees are shaking. Love your enemy even if your hand vibrates with the fear that your enemy might at any moment bite it.

After all, that's what bravery means. Doing it scared.

God, thanks for sending us Your love, which casts out all our fear. But also for giving us the bravery to do it scared.
