remembering is good for us

Today in the One Year Bible, we read from Deuteronomy 16:1-17:20. God reminds the Hebrews to remember that they were once slaves in Egypt, and He brought them out of slavery, so they should be careful to obey all of His commandments.

You and I were never slaves in Egypt, but we WERE slaves to our sinful nature before God saved us. Some of us even struggle with our sinful nature NOW that He has saved us.

CS Lewis has a very profound quote in the Narnia books when he says, "You come of the Lord Adam and the Lady Eve... that is both honour enough to erect the head of the poorest beggar, and shame enough to bow the shoulders of the greatest emperor on earth."

It's good for us to remember where we came from - so that we stay humble and remember to be kind to others. But it's good for us also to remember who He's making us - His children - so that we rise above our sin and learn to live holy lives.

God, thanks for reminding us who we are.
