the art of the deal

Today in the One Year Bible, we read from Numbers 32:1-33:39. The tribes of Reuben and Gad make Moses very angry by asking to be given land on the safe side of the river for their flocks and herds. Moses accuses them of not fighting with the rest of the tribes for the land that God promised them.

So they make a deal. They'll go fight if Moses will give them the land. And that's what happened.

Normally it's best not to think of "making a deal" with God, because His intents for us are always better than our own plans. But the Bible uses some examples here and there (like Jacob's whole life, and like the shrewd servant in Jesus's parable) to let us know that God DOES work with us if there's something that we really want.

So don't be afraid to ask. Who knows?

God, thanks for being understanding when we're being silly.
