wisdom in His commands
Today in the One Year Bible, we read from Leviticus 19:1-20:21. Here we find the ten commandments, along with a whole bunch of other commandments. And if we read through them, we find much wisdom.
For instance, Moses commands the Hebrew people to leave their land lying fallow for several years before they start harvesting the crops. This, as we now know, has to do with the nutrients in the soil being replenished. And modern farmers do well to follow his advice. But even though the Hebrew people didn't necessarily understand WHY they were to do the things commanded, they still benefited from following His instructions.
There is a great beauty in that. Children don't have to understand how digestion and nutrition work in order to eat their food and become strong and healthy from it. They simply must obey their parents and eat what they're told. We don't necessarily have to understand how religion and spirituality work in order to benefit from it. We just do what our priests and our parents teach us, and we grow strong.
God, thanks for making things work even when we don't understand them.
