being gentle
Today in the One Year Bible, we read from Hebrews 5:1-14. Paul tells us that it's good that our priests are human, because they are able to be gentle with us in our ignorance and sin. Since they are also dealing with their own weakness, it gives them patience and grace to deal with ours.
And there's a nice, big take home lesson right there. That, my friends, is one of the big reasons why God doesn't just take away your propensity for sin overnight. The fact that we have to struggle with our temptations and our weaknesses keeps us humble... and gives us empathy and patience for those who are also struggling with their own weaknesses.
We just need to fight against the temptation to become IMPATIENT with other people when we ourselves are struggling with something similar. The man who has a problem with alcohol can sometimes be especially hard on others who struggle with the same thing... seeing his own weakness in their actions. Let's make sure to remember His lovingkindness (which never fails) for US when we struggle, and extend the same love and kindness to our neighbor when they struggle too.
God, thanks for teaching us to be gentle.
