Today we read from Matthew 25:31-26:13 in the One Year Bible. Jesus tells us that it is VERY important for us to take care of those who need someone. Whether it's the hungry, the naked, or those in prison... we are to take care of them. Not to forget about them. He makes it sound as if our salvation might depend on it.
Whether we think "we have to do these things as part of our salvation" or "we do these things because we're saved", the point is that we need to be doing them. But when was the last time you visited someone in prison? For some of you, the answer might be "never."
And for some of you, actually visiting prisoners in prison might not be possible. You yourself might be a shutin. Or you might have too many responsibilities in life to carve out time to go visit prisoners. You CAN, however, pray for them. And you should do so daily. You might consider adding this to your daily prayer list? You might also look into becoming pen pals with a prisoner. You could be sending the weekly ray of hope into someone's life that turns their life around.
But many of you CAN visit prisoners. It will take some doing on your part. You have to make it happen... it's not like someone is going to come to your door and invite you to go to the prison with them. But if you do some google searches, you can find out how you can get involved in meeting the needs of those in jail.
However you do it, Jesus makes it clear that we are to do it. So you might consider making it a priority to reach out to a local prisoner and ease their suffering.
It's what you would want if you were locked away somewhere, right?
God, thanks for reminding us not to forget those in prison. Help us reach out.
