hearts of many will grow cold
Today we read about end times in Matthew 24:1-28 in the One Year Bible. Jesus tells us that in the end times, "The hearts of many will grow cold."
Now, we don't know if we're in the end times. Lots of people think we are. But people have been thinking that for 2000 years. We won't know when the end is here - it'll come like a thief in the night. Even Jesus said He didn't know when the end would come.
But we DO know that hearts will grow cold. And we can see that happening all around us, right? So many people, both inside the church and outside, are growing cold. Toward their family. Toward their children. Even toward their own lives. Suicide is one of the three leading causes of death in the US these days. Our hearts are growing cold.
How can we warm them up again? How can we breathe new life into frozen hearts? There are several things we can do.
Begin at home. Warm up - and break - your own heart. A broken and contrite heart God "will not despise", the Bible tells us. Meaning He will accept you every time, if you come to Him with a broken and repentant heart. That's number one: repent of known sin. Ask Him to reveal any sins that you're guilty of, and turn away from them. Ask Him to forgive you.
Two, forgive and love other people. Is there someone who has wronged you? Someone you have a grudge against? Do something nice for them. Be kind to them. Love them. And forgive them. That will make your heart soft and warm again.
Three: love people. Do random acts of kindness for strangers. Do not so random acts of kindness for friends and family. You'll be amazed how your heart will be warmed when you make a point of doing kind things for other people.
Those three things will warm our hearts again. Once you get your own heart warmed up, that warmth will spread to those around you.
It will set the world on fire.
God, thanks for teaching us how to warm up our cold, frozen hearts.
