a new song

Today in the One Year Bible, we read from Revelation 14:1-20. John tells us that a great choir sings a "new song" before the throne of God. And throughout the Bible, we read admonitions to sing a new song to God. Why is that important?

Probably for more reasons that I understand, but one that I DO understand is that God is continually working in our lives. He is HERE, closer than our very breath. In fact, it's interesting to realize that God may be the only thing we actually experience in the present moment. See, when you hear something, you hear what happened in the past... then the sound waves reach your ears. When you see something, you see what happened, then the light reached your eyes. Even when you FEEL something, it takes a few milliseconds for the sensation to travel to your brain from your sensory receptors in your skin. Even our very breath, we experience slightly after the fact. This is why we can truly say that God is closer to us than our very breath. We can actually experience Him NOW. Directly in contact with our soul - touching our mind in the actual present moment.

And since He is in the present moment with us, we should interact with Him here in the now. And yes, we CAN sing songs that were written before. Some of them are great, and express what our hearts intend to communicate to Him.

But NEW songs are formed in the present moment, which we are sharing with Him. So it's very appropriate to sing NEW songs in praise to Him.

God, thanks for meeting us in the NOW.
