to love and to share
Today we read from the One Year Bible. The passage is 1 Peter 4:7-5:14. Peter tells us two things by which we can live our entire lives.
First, he says to love each other deeply. "Love covers a multitude of sins," he says. And there is more truth to that statement than we'll plunder in our lifetimes. But let's begin by loving each other.
Second, he says to CHEERFULLY share our homes and meals with those who need help. There are alot of people needing help in the world today. Refugees from all over the world are leaving their countries because of the horrible lives they have there, and are trying to find new lives elsewhere. Not just in the U.S., though many come here because we're the wealthiest nation on the planet. And they need help. Peter makes it clear that we are to help them. It makes me very sad to read the comments by people who have lived in the U.S. all of their lives, through no merit of their own, who refuse to help people who need it the most, simply because they're "illegal"... which means that we've made laws not to help people in need. There are laws in some cities not to help homeless people, too. But Peter makes it clear ... and Jesus made it even MORE clear... that our job as Christians is to help people.
How can you help someone who needs it today?
God, thanks for making it clear. Please help us to love... and to share.
