to live and to die bravely
Today in the One Year Bible, we read from 1 Peter 2:11-3:7. Peter tells us that God has called us to do good, even if that means suffering.
In the picture above, we see Miguel Pro. He was a committed follower of Jesus, living in Mexico in the beginning of the 20th century. Because of his outspoken Christianity, the Mexican government executed him. At the time, the government was extremely anti Christian.
Miguel Pro bravely faced the firing squad. Seconds before his death, he loudly proclaimed "viva Cristo Rey!" Which means, "Long live Christ the King!" The intention of the government was to set an example and prevent others from following Jesus. But due to Miguel Pro's brave example and patient suffering, the execution had the opposite effect. Thousands of people were inspired by his life and death and became devout Christians, too.
You have a life and a death. Will you suffer patiently? Will you die bravely, setting the example for others? It's up to you.
God, thank You for the wonderful example of Miguel Pro. Please help us to live - and die - as bravely as he did.
PS today is his feast day
