the mysterious melchizedek
Today in the One Year Bible, we read from Hebrews 7:1-17. Paul tells us about a mysterious figure named Melchizedek, and he says, "There is no record of his father or mother - no beginning or end to his life. He remains a priest forever, resembling the Son of God."
That's quite a mystery, isn't it? And there are tons of conspiracy theories about him. Many books have been written claiming to solve "the mystery of Melchizedek." But one thing jumps out of this story into our lives today. Paul says, "The one who blesses is greater than the one who is blessed."
Think about what that means. Of course, the obvious and immediate example that comes to mind is God blessing us. But think about blessing others. When you choose to be a blessing in someone's life, you are (at least for that moment) being the "bigger person." When you choose to bless, rather than curse, someone who hurts you... this verse from the Bible tells you that you're "greater" than the one you're blessing.
It's not always easy to be the bigger person. It often means putting aside our pride, our anger, our revenge, and our ego. But blessing someone, and being the bigger person, takes us in the direction we want to go - becoming the saint that God created us to be.
God, help us bless everyone in our lives - especially those who least deserve it.
