building on one another

Today in the One Year Bible, we read from Hebrews 3:1-19. Paul tells us that we should not harden our hearts like the children of Israel did, and like Pharaoh did, but instead we should keep soft, broken hearts.

And you might think to yourself, "Didn't God HARDEN Pharaoh's heart? How can He tell us NOT to harden our hearts, when He Himself hardens our heart?"

That's a good question. And it has a good answer. God works in each of our lives. And He gives each of us a seed of faith. We either choose to grow that seed, watering it and giving it plenty of sun, or we choose to kill that seed. When we harden our hearts, we are killing the seed. Once we've begun growing our seed of faith, God rewards that decision and gives us more faith. But if we continue to harden our hearts, He might decide to use our lives as a cautionary tale. That's what happened to Pharaoh. And that's what happened to the children of Israel.

Don't let that be what happens to you! It's easy to fix. Just repent. Tell God, "I'm sorry I did that. Please break my heart again." And He will. He'll give you a heart of flesh once more, and another seed of faith. Take care of this one.

God, thanks for rewarding our faith - and for giving us second chances. (and third... and fourth...)
