what He came for

Today in the One Year Bible, we read from 1 Timothy 1:1-20. Paul tells us what Jesus came for. "Jesus came into the world to save sinners." And he then pointed out that he was the chief of sinners.

But it's easy to forget that, isn't it? It's easy to think that the church is supposed to be full of good people. Which is why so many people think the church is full of hypocrites. They forget that churches are where sinners are SUPPOSED to go, to find the healing that they need.

He came to seek us out. To find us in our sins, and to save us from them. HE came to find US. So many times, we think of religion as US looking for HIM. But Paul makes it clear that He came to find us, and to save us. And the person who is writing the Bible itself calls himself the chief of sinners.

This should make you feel better. He's not hiding from you. He's not looking down on you and your sins. He's not a cosmic killjoy who wants to take all your fun away. He came to save sinners. Like Paul. Like you and me.

God, thanks for making it clear that You seek us out.

But sinners can become redeemed and given a new nature from the Holy Spirit. A nature that doesn't give in to sin and leaves the dark deeds behind: "...and such were some of you; but you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, and in the Spirit of our God." 1 Corinthians 6:11 and read Romans 6. Peace be with you
