the reason for His mercy

Today in the One Year Bible, we read from Psalm 51:1-19. The psalmist makes it very clear for us why God has mercy on us.

And you might be wondering why. If it's been a rough day, and you've found yourself sinning more than usual. If you lost your temper and yelled at your spouse. If you were a little unethical at work. If you were not exactly truthful when you were asked why you did something. Why does God have mercy on us when we sin?

The man who wrote the Psalms tells us. Because of His unfailing love. Why does He love us so much? Well, that becomes apparent if you're a parent. (Sorry, I know that was a bad pun. I couldn't resist.) You love your children because they're your children. Not because they earned it. Not because you admire them (hard to do when you're changing their diaper.) Not because they're perfect. Just because they're yours.

God loves us more than we can imagine. He has loved us before time began, and will continue loving us after it ends. The depth of His love can only be hinted at. He loves us because He IS love. And out of that endless love comes His mercy and forgiveness. He greatly desires to forgive your sins and bring you back to Him. That's what He wants more than anything, when it comes to you. You don't have to beg Him to reluctantly forgive you. He is running to you with His arms of forgiveness open wide. Just let Him in.

God, thank You for Your mercy and forgiveness. Help us open our hearts to You.
