Jesus didn't trust us

In the One Year Bible today, we read from John 2:1-25. This is a great story. Jesus goes to the wedding at Cana. They run out of wine. Mary tells Jesus, and He says it's none of His business - His time hadn't come yet. And then Mary says the last thing she is recording saying in the entire Bible: "Do whatever He tells you." Those are good words to live by, aren't they?

So He turns the water into wine. Quite a miracle. He brings joy and life back to the wedding party. He breathes new life into the celebration. As He does in our lives, every day.

And everyone is amazed at what He has done, and they begin to believe in Him. But the Bible says something very interesting next. It says He didn't trust them, because He knew what was in the heart of man.

And He's right not to trust us, right? The crowds proclaimed "Hosanna! Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!" one day, and just a few days later the crowds are shouting, "Give us Barabbas! Crucify Jesus!" He already sees that Judas will betray Him long before it happens - maybe before Judas knew it himself. He knew Peter would deny Him while Peter still thought he was strong.

He knew you and I would sin, even while we were in church praising His name. He knows the heart of man. He knows what we're capable of. And so He doesn't trust us.

But He does love us.

He's waiting with open arms to welcome us back after we fall. Don't worry. He knows what's in your heart. And He loves you anyway.

God, thanks for being wise enough not to trust us, and loving enough to welcome us back.
