God owes us big time
In today's reading from the One Year Bible, which is John 3:1-21, Jesus tells us what God owes us.
When I did a Google search for "what God owes us" for the image above, I found tons of pictures that said, "God owes us nothing." But that's not true. It would be nice if that were true. But it's wrong. Jesus gives us a hint what God owes us in today's reading when He says, "Everyone who does not believe in Him has been condemned already." And the answer to "What does God owe us?" is answered very clearly in Romans 6:23, where we read "For the wages of sin is death." God owes us death, because we have sinned. We deserve condemnation. We stand guilty of sinning. And the wages that our sin earns is eternal death.
That's the bad news. God owes us death. The good news is that God doesn't want to give us what He owes us. He wants to save us from the death that we're owed. That's why Jesus came - to save us from the death that we already face because of our sin. We read in today's excerpt that if we believe in Jesus, we will be saved from that condemnation. Of course, believing Him means doing what He says. You can't say you believe someone and then not do what they tell you to do. So when we believe Him, and do what He says, He saves us from the death He owes us, and brings us to eternal life and joy in Him.
God, thank You for not giving us what You owe us.
