what we understand

In the One Year Bible today, we read from Luke 23:44-24:12. And we read that the angels who appeared to Mary and the other women at the tomb were wearing robes. That made sense to them, because people wore robes in those days. But it can strike us as odd today. I wonder if angels would wear robes if they appeared to people today?

Because God relates to us in ways that we can understand. That's why when He speaks to us in dreams, it's often in the form of relatives that we trust. That's why when He gives us messages, He sends people that we recognize, like Mary. He could send the angels from Ezekiel, which were wheels within wheels, covered in eyes, but that would probably freak us out. So He sends people we can trust and understand.

Jesus also taught us using things we understood - water and bread and fish and sheep. I mean, it's not like He hadn't MADE those things for us in the first place - they were His creation to begin with. But He used things like that to teach us deeper things which are harder to grasp.

He does that in our lives today, too. Teaching us to love and forgive those who hurt us, so that we can begin to understand how He forgives us the same way.

God, thank You for using the things we understand to teach us the things we don't.
