speak of the devil?
Today in the One Year Bible, we read from Luke 24:13-53. And in it, the two from the Emmaus road return to the 11 disciples (sadly minus Judas) and they're telling them about Jesus when suddenly He appears among them. There's a saying that, "Speak of the devil and he will appear," but there isn't really any evidence of that old superstition being true. However, we know for certain that when we speak of Jesus, He IS among us.
We're told this is true in Matthew 18:20, where Jesus tells us, "Where two or more gather in my name, there I am in the midst of them." Now what does this mean exactly? Isn't God omnipresent? Isn't He everywhere?
Well, yes, He is. There's nowhere you can go to get away from Him. Even if you go to the heavens, or down to the depths, there He is. But we experience Him more fully in some places than in others. When we go to church. When we pray. When we read the Bible. When we eat the bread and drink the wine. We experience Him in a way that we don't find Him out in the street or at the mall.
Don't our hearts burn within us as we read about His being among us? Let's invite Him to fill our moments with His presence, and talk about Him with our friends. Where two or more of us gather in His name, there He is with us.
God, thank You for being with us in especially powerful ways. Please draw us to Yourself.
