the courage to be near Him
Today we read from Luke 8:22-39 in the One Year Bible. This is the story of Legion, the man who was filled with many demons. Jesus is far more powerful than all of the demons put together. They beg him to be sent into some pigs, and He allows them.
And then we see what humans do. The people from the village see the man formerly known as Legion, in his right mind and demon-free... and they are terrified. They beg Jesus to leave them alone and go away. And we look back and scratch our heads and maybe even laugh at them. Why would they be afraid? Why would they send away the One who could help THEM to be free of their demons, too?
But that's the usual human response. We KNOW we're sinful. Peter told Jesus to go away, too. Because when we see the goodness and holiness and love of God, we realize how bad and unholy and full of hate and fear we are. The contrast can be terrifying. And so we naturally want Him to go away so we don't feel bad about ourselves anymore.
However, what we NEED to do is exactly what we would tell those villagers to do - don't send Him away, but draw closer to Him. Spend time with Him. Get to know Him better. And eventually, you'll find yourself being more like Him.
That's what life is all about.
God, thanks for not going away when we foolishly tell You to.
