a tale of two cities
St Augustine talks to us today from his great book, City of God, in our selection from A Year with the Church Fathers. He tells us about two cities, and makes an interesting point about why we should love our enemies.
He says that the two worlds are commingled right now. The city of man, which is headed for damnation, and the city of God, which is headed to heaven. Or technically, it's heaven already, but will ultimately be fulfilled in eternity. The Kingdom of God is among us already. But I digress.
He says that one reason why we should love our enemy is because they might be in one city now, but they will end up in the other city eventually. If we love everyone, then we will always be loving our friends, even if they're currently our enemies.
It's an interesting way to think of the "wheat and tares" parable that Jesus taught us. Let us grow up together, and He will separate us in the end.
God, thanks for teaching us to love our enemies, since they might eventually be our friends.
