a hard assignment
St Ignatius of Antioch talks to us about being kind to unpleasant people today in A Year with the Church Fathers. He says that being kind to nice people is easy - everyone does that. But being kind to nasty people takes a special kind of patience and love. And only with God's help can we do it.
So the next time your family member or your coworker is mean to you, keep this advice in mind. And it helps me to listen to St Therese of Liseux, who used to sit by the very people she disliked the most at mealtime, so that eventually no one could even tell who she liked or didn't because she treated everyone so kindly. It wasn't until her diary was written that they found out how difficult it had been for her to put up with some of the other people at her convent.
Let's strive to love people like that. And ask for help when we fall short.
God, thanks for giving us tough assignments that we can only do with Your help.
