Lewis talks about loving God today in A Year with C.S. Lewis.
He says that it might be hard to love God. And I think for some people, it is. Some people are mad at God. Or they are afraid of Him. Sometimes, if we have a bad relationship with our biological father, it's hard for us to trust or love our heavenly father.
So how do we love Him if it's hard to do? Well, Jesus gives us a great clue. He asked Peter "Do you love me?" and every time Peter said he did, Jesus told him what to do. "Feed my sheep."
If you want to grow your love of God, take care of His children. Do kind things for them. Visit them in prison. Bring them soup when they're sick. Pray for them when they're hurting. Listen when they need to talk. Love His kids. In loving them, you learn to love Him.
But there are two other things you can do to learn to love Him more. One of them is to see what He does. When you genuinely see God's work in the world and in your life, you can't help but love Him. He is so good and amazing that when we really see what He's doing and why, our natural response is to love Him for it. So read books about Him. Read the lives of saints. Keep a journal, and look at what He's done for you over the years. Taste and see that the Lord is good.
Finally, and you're probably tired of hearing me say this by now... but ask Him to help you. The number one, most important, greatest commandment we've been given is to love God. So if you ask Him to help you do that, do you think He's going to ignore your prayer? Do you think He's going to say no? Of course not. He will answer your prayer, and He will help you learn to love Him more.
God, thank You for being worthy of all of our love.
